The steel looks badass and costs less; the ceramic looks more finesse and is 1K+ more, even in the used market! So steel (973, 682) vs. ceramic (683, 959) bezel, and in the ceramic - black vs. blue bezel (683 vs 959). In Panerai I was able to try on the 973, that's the replacement for the 682. They also had the 683, same watch with ceramic bezel, as well as the 959, again same case but with a grey dial and blue bezel. Prototype teething issues notwithstanding, the PAM 682 really nails the details for a quality and fun niche model from Panerai. With sapphire crystals both front and back, 300m water resistance, and the Luminor’s signature lever crown guard, the 42mm Submersible covers all the Panerai bases.
The 682 is a cool watch and can be had in the pre-owned market for 30-40% off retail. That is where you should be price wise for any of the Panerai models. I just got a 1389 and enjoy the 47 mm case but I have a 7.5-7.75 inch wrist. The older models, such as the 682, with the 9010 have a case thickness of 14.37MM, I wrote a slightly longer answer here, with more information if you care to look, PAM 682 vs PAM 973. Thanks for the link and the info on the case thickness, great info.

In terms of size, aesthetics, and functionality, these two new 42mm Submersibles (PAM00683 and PAM 00959) succeed the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic, or PAM00682, which James reviewed in 2017. Owner Review: Panerai Submersible PAM682 – It’s a Mini Submarine! I was looking for a quality made dive watch which had a strong heritage, unique design cues, and versatility. I was also seeking an alternative to the Rolex sub and Omega Seamaster. Enter the Panerai Submersible. The submersible is probably the modern interpretation of a Panerai dive watch featuring a rotating bezel. It was introduced in 1998 with a case size of 44mm. Most submersibles were made in 44mm and 47mm until 2017 when they released the PAM682 in a 42mm case to fit men with smaller wrists like mine. Pros: Smaller wrist sizes can now enjoy Panerai. Adjusting time on the go is super easy. The rubber strap is comfortable on the wrist. Cons: Some may appreciate an open case-back. No in-house movement. Some may find the pricing to be expensive. Overall Rating: 7.8/10. Value for money – 7.5/10. Wearability – 8/10. Design – 8/10. Build Quality – 8/10
A closer examination reveals a few other subtle differences between the 683 and the 682, like the re-ordering of the dial wordmarks, which now read “Panerai, Submersible, Automatic,” along with the new addition of the water resistance indicator at 6 o’clock.
