Learn about the new 36mm Rolex Explorer (reference 124270) with a modern bracelet, movement and design. Compare it with the old 39mm model and see the differences that matter. My guess is that the extra lug to lug length compared with the 36 was just what I needed to make it perfect. Given that Rolex doesn’t make half links for the Explorer 36, does anyone have a solution to recommend, other than giving up on the bracelet all together (which I really don’t want)? Learn what lug-to-lug is and why it matters for choosing a watch that fits your wrist. Find the lug-to-lug measurements of popular Rolex models such as Submariner, Daytona, Datejust and more.
The lug span was reduced from 20mm to 19mm in modern form, and this brings the watch into a far more natural territory on the wrist. Older 36mm Explorers have a slightly larger presence on the wrist with a wider footprint at the lug, but appeared, in my opinion, slightly awkward in proportion. 36mm with a 19 to 14mm wristband simply sounds tiny (or very retro for that matter), no matter what the lug to lug dimensions are. On the flip side, with the 47.4mm lug to lug for the 214270 I wonder if the watch will seem too clunky and the finesse and wearability of the timepiece gets lost. It is not the 36mm size that I cannot adjust to, it is the 19mm lug width combined with the taper to 14mm. If this had been the traditional 20mm taper to 16mm at the clasp, I would be much more interested in adding this watch to my collection. The 226570 doesn't see a diameter change like the Sub did and its lug-to-lug is also the same, but it does have a narrower tapering of the lugs (material was taken from the inside) and a slightly wider Oyster bracelet nestled in between.

I thought I add a couple of comparison pictures between 36 mm Explorer and my wife’s 31mm DateJust with diamond bezel. When aligned per bottom of the log, you can see a big difference in overall size between the mid sized ladies watch and this Explorer.
