In 1921 Cartier offered the first variation on the ‘Normale’ – the Tank Cintrée, which slimmed the square into an elongated rectangle and curved the case to follow the shape of the wrist. Made in small numbers, its elegance was personified by Fred Astaire, who bought one in 1928. Sketches for the Tank Cintrée.

Is the new Rolex GMT-Master II 126710GRNR with a black-grey bezel boring or beautifully monochromatic? We go hands-on in our review. As expected with a Rolex caliber, it is highly shock resistant and accurate – running within the superlative chronometer standards of plus or minus two seconds a day. The Rolex GMT Master II 126711CHNR “Rootbeer” is a prime example that two-tone watches can work in today's marketplace. The GMT-Master II is able to do this because the local 12-hour hand and 24-hour GMT-hand move independently of one another, allowing you to display two different time zones on just the dial and freeing up the bezel for quick access to a third if need be. At 40mm, the GMT-Master II is the Goldilocks of sports watches—neither too big nor too small. Compared to the Submariner, it’s more compact, making it perfect for everyday wear. The weight is just right, giving it a reassuring presence on the wrist.
I realize many don't care for two-tone, but this particular watch seems well done. I'm glad they didn't use green dials or different color 24 hour hands on the new releases. The half black, half grey bezel is subtle and blends well with the steel of the watch. As the first to simultaneously display two time zones simultaneously via the 24 hour dial and bezel, this is the usual essential response. Just two years later in 1955, Rolex came to town with their big boy pants on and introduced the GMT-Master. Made in collaboration with Pan American Airways, perhaps the most significant airline of the 50s .
In addition to conventional hour, minute and seconds hands, the GMT-Master II features an arrow-tipped hand, which circles the dial once every 24 hours, as well as a bidirectional rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel.
I have a small wrist. 6.5” to be exact. I originally asked to be placed on the list 4 months ago for a Datejust 41 but canceled it today to be added for this watch. The datejust 41 looked too big on my wrist. Initially I was gonna get a blue dial, two tone submariner but when I tried it on in the jewellers it was too much shiny colour for me. I also find GMT complications useful and like the slight difference of a GMT master vs the massive popularity of the Submariner.
